Katy Juranty

M.A., Educational Technology, University of San Francisco

Current

I am a recent graduate of the University of San Francisco’s Educational Technology master’s program. I currently works as an Academic Success Coach where I provide mentoring and advising to a caseload of 600 undergraduate students. Working within the Center for Academic and Student Achievement (CASA) in the division of Student Life, I strive to employ a developmentally and culturally appropriate framework and methodology to my new, transfer, and continuing students. I work especially closely with students that are struggling to achieve their goals in higher education. I leverage technological tools to assist my work, most recently serving on the small team that spearheaded the university’s transition to a Salesforce case management system, which aims to better identify students at risk of being retained or of graduating on time. I also develop short-term and long-term strategic frameworks for my department that mirror our University's 2028 Strategic Plan, specifically programs that increase overall student retention, reduce the sophomore retention gap, assist transfer and international student populations, and improve services offered by our center.

Advanced Education

My work in the Educational Technology department has focused on the role of implementing tools where appropriate in a variety of educational settings. Examples of my work include: digital property guides for educators, tools on cyberbullying, a podcast regarding decision making for college students, and a year-long curriculum for developing and assessing a co-curricular course for students. Katy has working knowledge of the following computer tools and programs: • Suite of Google, Microsoft, and Apple products (Docs, Word, Pages, Sheets, Excel, Numbers, Slides, Powerpoint, and Keynote) • Wordpress • Audacity • Hindenberg Audio • Screenflow • LucidChart • ON1 Photo • Mind Mup • Twisted Wave • iMovie • Bootstrap • CSS • Markdown

The Beginning

Interestingly enough, my work experience spans from preschool through higher education. I initially gained interest in the field of early education when I participated in a two-year Americorps program in San Francisco which focused on expanding literacy opportunities for 3 to 5 year olds in under-resourced educational centers. During this time, I gained experience in writing and winning grant proposals, collaborating with community leaders to provide needed services for our school, and building literacy-rich activities for preschoolers. This teaching experience then led me to gain full early childhood certification through the City College of San Francisco. I have taught as an assistant teacher for a full-day preschool run by the San Francisco school district. I then went on to become a lead teacher for a full-day Head Start preschool funded by the State of Washington and the Gates Foundation, and also at a parent participation cooperative preschool where I led a part day program while also guiding parents as in-class assistant teachers.

The Future

Upon completion of the Educational Technology master’s program, I hope to leverage my vast experience and expertise in education (both inside the classroom and in various roles of administration and support) to bring a conscious technological vision to schools and universities, while also increasing access to technology and building student connections with 21st century skills.
